What is it?
Migraines are very different from other headaches. Their intensity and duration put them in a separate category – episodic headaches. These are a neurological condition that can cause multiple symptoms that can completely debilitate someone. The severe throbbing pain can be found on one side of the head.
Migraines are actually more prevalent in this day and age than more people think. They are thought to affect one in five women and one in 15 men. Some people can have migraines frequently, up to several times a week, whilst others can go years without an attack. The duration of a migraine can last for hours or even up to days, and the pain intensity can interfere with daily living.
There are two main types of migraine: with aura (classical migraines) and without aura (common migraines). Aura usually includes visual symptoms like seeing lines or flashes, or even loss of vision. Essentially, auras are pre-indicators that the migraine is coming on.
How does it affect someone?
Migraines are neurological, which means they are associated with severe throbbing pain and a pulsing sensation, affecting one side of the head. They are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, difficulty speaking, numbness, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.
Migraines can progress through four stages: prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome. However, not everyone who suffers migraines goes through all these stages.
Prodrome consists of subtle changes that may warn of an upcoming migraine. It can include: constipation, mood changes, food cravings, and increased thirst and urination.
Aura occur before or during migraines. They are reversible symptoms of the nervous system and are usually visual as previously mentioned. Other aura examples include: vision phenomena and/or loss, pins and needles in an arm or leg, weakness and uncontrollable jerking.
The actual attack itself lasts from four to 7 hours if untreated, but it varies from person to person. This is when someone will feel the intense pain along with nausea and vomiting.
The post-drome is the period after the attack. It leaves you feeling drained, confused, and washed out which can interfere with daily activities.
How best to prevent a migraine?
One of the best ways of preventing migraines is recognising the things that trigger an attack. Some certain foods can trigger an attack, along with being stressed. Keeping a diary of previous attacks will let you know what foods or activities, or stress levels may have caused the migraine.
